The science:
Petroleum starts as algae and plankton. Millions of years of heat and pressure transforms it into something our bodies never evolved to handle. The benzene and PAHs in petroleum don't exist in living organisms - they're created by geological processes that turn organic matter into poison.
Common petroleum-based materials:
- Polyester, nylon, acrylic fabrics
- Synthetic threads holding seams
- Chemical dyes for color
- Plastic buttons and zippers
- Elastic bands and stretchy fibers
- Care labels and brand tags
Even organic cotton options might use petroleum solutions. Most organic cotton uses petroleum and petroleum derived chemicals during the manufacturing of the actual fabric.
Your skin is your largest organ, and it's permeable. Petroleum compounds from clothing pass through it daily. Add heat, sweat, and movement, and absorption increases.
But here's the thing - you'd never know it's happening. This dermal absorption occurs without observable symptoms or biomarkers. Current sustainability metrics focus on quantifiable environmental impacts: water consumption, carbon emissions, waste, pesticides, and factory conditions. Petroleum absorption rates through skin remain unmeasured, unregulated, and therefore unaddressed in industry standards.
The petroleum burden:
- Bioaccumulates in fatty tissue
- Passes to children through pregnancy and breast milk
- Never fully eliminated
- Each exposure adds to lifetime total
By age 40, you carry decades of petroleum accumulation.
